Goodbye 2012

As my family and I volunteered at Rotary Lights this season, a sense of Waunakee pride filled my heart. This event, like so many others that take place in our Village, seems to bring out our community spirit. As you can tell in the picture of me with my kids, Sydney and Sawyer, I felt no shame whatsoever in wearing a reindeer antler headband.

I am humbled to be the Village Administrator in such a wonderful place to call home. Thanks to all of you for being a part of our community in 2012. Cheers to the new year. May you and your family have a healthy, prosperous, and joy-filled 2013.

Tri 4 Schools National Contest

We have some very exciting news regarding Tri 4 Schools – the organization that sponsors the Kid’s Triathlon first offered in Waunakee in May of 2012. Tri 4 Schools is a non-profit organization devoted to ending childhood obesity in Dane County through youth swimming, biking, and running events and by supporting health and fitness programs. Healthier kids, brighter futures!

Tri 4 Schools has been selected as one of ten semi-finalists in a national contest held by the Partnership for a Healthier America, called the End Childhood Obesity Innovation Challenge. If Tri 4 Schools is selected as one of the top three projects, they will have the opportunity to present at the Building a Healthier Future Summit in Washington D.C. in March 2013, hosted by honorary chairperson, Michelle Obama. We also receive the following tremendous benefits:
  • Consulting time with several industry experts.
  • A platform to share our ideas with 1,000 attendees dedicated to ending this crisis.
  • The winning video, voted on after we present at the summit, will receive $10,000 to help turn our ideas into a reality.
  • As a host community of Tri 4 Schools, we will have exposure to a much larger audience starting today and leading through the summit and beyond! We have already been interviewed by Fortune Magazine and expect to receive more national media attention.
We are asking for your help in spreading the word about this contest and for your vote! Voting opened on December 12, 2012 and ends on February 1, 2013 at 12:00 noon.

Vote online HERE (you must have or create a Facebook account to vote)

Mondota Freeze Contest

The Mendota Freeze Contest is another great opportunity for our community to acknowledge the lakes during the winter months, and not just the warm summer months. The winter season brings with it many fun outdoor activities that utilize our frozen assets such as ice fishing, cross-country skiing, skating, and ice boating.

This free contest began at 12:01am on Saturday, December 1, 2012 and will run until Lake Mendota officially freezes; as determined by the Wisconsin State Climatology Office. It is open to anyone that would like to participate. To enter, simply go to MendotaFreeze.com and fill in the date you think Lake Mendota will officially freeze.

The first eight participants that guess the correct date will win some winter-themed prizes donated by local businesses. The grand prize is a ski equipment package from Erehwon Mountain Outfitter with a value of $327. It includes one set of cross-country skis, poles, boots, and bindings.

The other prizes, in order of value, are two 1-day lift tickets from Tyrol Basin Ski & Snowboard Area, two $50 gift cards from Middleton Sports & Fitness, a "Fun in the Snow" toy basket from Learning Express Toys, an Airhead snow sled from Fontana Sports Specialties, a "Warm You Up" gift basket from Yola's Cafe & Coffee Shop, and a "Family 4 Pack" from Menchie's Frozen Yogurt.

This past year, Lake Mendota froze on January 14th, 2012. What day will it be this year? Submit your guess at MendotaFreeze.com.

Healthy Lakes. Healthy Communities.

I recently attended the Yahara Lakes Community Breakfast which was coordinated by the Clean Lakes Alliance. At the event I learned a lot about efforts underway to clean the Yahara Lakes chain, which includes Lakes Mondota, Monona, Waubesa and Kegonsa. With action plans in place, experts believe that we have an opportunity to make real and lasting improvements in the health of our lakes and waterways. The identified key and goal is to reduce phosphorus loading in the lakes by 50% by 2025.

You can learn more by visiting http://www.cleanlakesalliance.com/. Or, take a few minutes to watch this series of videos which were featured at the event:

2013 Village Budget and Tax Levy Approved

At the 11/19/2012 Village Board meeting, the Village Board adopted a total expenditure budget of $16,220,605. This budget includes funding for operations, debt service and major street projects both construction and reconstruction in nature. I am pleased to report that the current budget maintained current services, qualified for the expenditure restraint program, stayed well under the levy limit cap, provided for major capital projects and met the village’s financial policies.

The total village property tax levy for the 2013 budget year is $8,532,724. This is a 2% increase in total levy dollars over the 2012 property tax levy. The village’s total assessed value grew $1,829,500 over the 2012 budget assessed value or 1.83%. The total assessed value of the village is now $1,312,681,800.

The local assessed tax rate is $6.724 per thousand of assessed valuation compared to $6.605 for 2012 or an increase of 1.80%. The average home in Waunakee is valued at $281,076 and would see a local village tax of $1,890. The average home in Waunakee in 2012 was valued at $288,750 and paid a local village tax of $1,907.

I wish to specifically thank Finance Director Dave Ferris, Finance Department staff and the departmental managers for working hard to accomplish a responsible budget that guarantees delivery of the top notch services that our citizens have come to enjoy and appreciate. I am also thankful for the dedication of the Village Board and Finance Committee who gave careful consideration to the budget proposals.

TDS Upgrade Progress

We have an update on the TDS work currently being performed in our community. TDS is in the progress of upgrading their system for the purpose of offering higher speed internet to their customers. For the most part, most of the infrastructure has been installed, but restoration is not complete. TDS will be completing the restoration in the spring of 2013. The larger cabinets are located in private easements that were obtained by TDS. TDS has offered to meet with residents that have concerns and will discuss ways of mitigating sight lines through landscaping and/or fencing. The Village’s ability to regulate these facilities on private easements is limited. If residents have concerns about restoration or would like to discuss restoration, landscaping or requested fencing they can contact TDS directly. The contact person at TDS is Patrick Yates and his telephone number is 664-4391.

Door-to-Door Merchant License

Selling door-to-door is controlled by Village Ordinance 22.61 through 22.71 and State Statute.  If a person is selling a product door-to-door he or she is required to obtain a permit through Village Hall.  The image to the left is the license that the Village of Waunakee issues to door-to-door sales people it deems suitable.  If you have any doubt as to whether or not the person coming to your door is legitimate, verify that they have this permit, and the current year in the header.
Please note that charitable organizations asking for monetary donations do not need this permit.

If you have any additional questions about this license, please feel free to contact me at: adminintern@vil.waunakee.wi.us or at 850-2830.  If you would like a larger image of the license, please request one via email.  Thank you!

Final Leaf Pick Up

Final leaf pick up will be the week of November 12, 2012 due to the fact that we need to get the leaf equipment switched over for snow removal operation. Place leaves on the terrace, not in the road. Leaves in bags will NOT be collected. Pick up begins Monday and is completed when Public Works has made it through the Village. Leaves can still be taken out to the compost site on Highway Q south of the Village, just past Highway K.

Halloween Safety Reminders from the Waunakee PD

Halloween Trick or Treating will be on Wednesday, October 31 from 5 – 7pm.  The following are some safety tips for parents and children:
  • If you set jack-o-lanterns on your porch with candles in them, make sure they are far enough out of the way so kids’ costumes won't accidentally catch fire.
  • Teach your children how to properly cross a street.  Only cross streets at crosswalks.
  • Help your child pick out or make a costume that has eye holes large enough for good peripheral vision.
  • For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.
  • To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.
  • Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
  • If your child is carrying a prop, make sure the tips are smooth and flexible enough to not cause injury if fallen on.
  • Check over candy that is collected for any foreign objects.
  • Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren't going with them.
  • The safest idea is to have an adult accompany kids. If you’re not with the kids, be sure to set a time they will be home by. Make sure they know how important it is for them to be home on time.
  • Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult.

Clean Sweep Closing for the Season

The Dane County / City of Madison Clean Sweep Program for recycling household hazardous waste will end its 2012 season on Wednesday, October 31st at 2:00 PM.

Items that can be dropped off at Clean Sweep include oil based paints, pesticides, poisons, household products containing organic solvents, ignitable, aerosols, and non-automotive type rechargeable batteries.

On the final day, all traffic will be routed to the Badger Road driveway behind the Dane County Highway garage. Customers will be directed to drive through the facility and remain in their cars while the products are unloaded.

The Product Exchange will be closed during this period.

Customers with large loads will be directed to a parking stall for unloading. A large turnout is anticipated, so there may be delays. The Clean Sweep staff highly recommends that you should avoid the last day rush and drop off materials before the 31st.

Normal hours of operation are on Tuesday – Saturday from 7:00am to 2:00pm. The site is located at the Dane County Highway garage, 2302 Fish Hatchery Road in Madison.

There are only a few weeks left to make an appointment to dispose of very small quantity generator business wastes. Appointment times are filling up fast, so make your appointment soon. October 19th is the last day for business appointments during our 2012 season.

Prior to the last Saturday the site can be accessed from West Badger Road. It is important to drop off household hazardous waste during the listed hours of operation. Leaving materials at the site when it is closed is illegal and can lead to a $2,000.00 fine.

In early 2013, Clean Sweep will be moving to a new permanent facility which will allow the program to operate all year long. More details about this will be announced later this year.

To find out more about any of the Clean Sweep programs, please visit our Web site at www.danecountycleansweep.com.

Daytime Burglaries on the Rise

Madison, WI. October 5, 2012 – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a large number of daytime burglaries occurring in the western part of the county.

Since August 16th, deputies have been called to 23 homes that were burglarized while the residents were away. In some cases the thieves left with nothing, while in others, they stole electronics, cash, jewelry, and guns. If the thieves find an unsecure door or window they take advantage of it, but they have also forced their way into homes on numerous occasions.

On Wednesday, October 3rd, three homes in the town of Westport were burglarized. As one of the homeowners approached their house, they witnessed a white Toyota or Honda leaving the area at a high rate of speed. Sheriff’s investigators are seeking information on the possible involvement of this vehicle in the burglaries, and any other tips related to these crimes. It remains unknown if all of these break-ins are related, but there are commonalities.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is asking citizens to be aware of neighborhood activity and report anything suspicious by calling 911 immediately. Protect belongings by locking doors, windows, and garages, in addition to securing valuables inside the home. Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to call the Dane County tip line at (608) 284-6900.
