New Online Animal Licensing Program

The Village of Waunakee will be using a brand new online animal licensing program, PetData. The Village chose to privatize animal licensing beginning in 2014 to promote animal licensing, to increase the cost-effectiveness of the program, and to provide additional services to its citizens. The Village will no longer be issuing animal licenses at any of their locations. Please feel free to visit the Village of Waunakee website for further information:

Village of Waunakee PetData, Inc. Animal Licensing Information

Licensing your animals is easy and can now be completed from the comforts of your own home! Licenses are issued on a calendar year basis. A license is required for all dogs and cats over 5 months of age. Proof of rabies vaccination from your veterinarian stating the manufacturer name, serial number of the vaccine, expiration date of the vaccination, and spay/neuter information must be provided to PetData before a license can be issued by mail to you.

Safety Tips for Running/Walking in the Dark!

If you're running in the early morning or at night, even at dusk, wear white, yellow, or orange clothes. Also, make sure you have reflective gear on. Although some items (running shoes, jackets) already have reflective pieces on them, it doesn't hurt to add more. A headlamp or flashlight is also a great item for runners who do a lot of early morning or evening running.

Choose a well-lit route
It might not be your favorite route to run, but the most well-lit route is your safest choice. Oncoming cars see you better, and you'll always be able to see the road and avoid potential hazards.

Always run against traffic
It's easier to avoid cars if you can see them coming. Avoid busy roads and those with no shoulders or sidewalks.

Run with a Buddy
There's strength and safety in numbers. If possible, try to never run alone. If you're running alone, let someone know the route you're running and approximately how long you will be out.

Carry a cell phone
You'll be able to contact police immediately if something happens to you or you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Vary your routes and times
Potential attackers can study runners' routines and loom in a particularly dark or isolated area. Don't make yourself an easy target.

ReadyWisconsin Helps You Keep Thanksgiving Safe

Over the river and through the woods...people across Wisconsin will be driving and flying for the holidays. ReadyWisconsin wants you and your family to be safe. Follow these simple travel and holiday tips that can save you from heartaches, headaches and potential dangers.

On the Road
Check the roads: Before you leave, get the latest Wisconsin road conditions at
www.511wi.gov or call 511
Keep gas in the tank: Have at least a half tank of gas in your car in case you are stranded or stuck and need to run your heater
Have a winter emergency kit: Keep a kit in your vehicle with candles and matches, a flashlight, pocket knife, snacks, a cell phone adapter, a blanket and extra clothing. For a complete list and a chance to win a kit, go to
http://ReadyWisconsin.wi.gov

Thanksgiving Day Fire Danger
Each year more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day
Leading cause of fires: unattended cooking
Make sure all stoves, ovens and ranges are turned off when you leave the kitchen
Set timers to keep track of turkeys and other food items that require extended cooking times
Follow all manufacturer guidelines regarding the appropriate use of appliances including turkey fryers
Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, and other items away from your stovetop

Accidents Happen, Be Ready
Cooking-related burns are common at Thanksgiving. Save the butter for the rolls and not a burn. For superficial burns, cool the area by running cold water on the burn until the heat eases, then loosely cover the burn with a sterile dressing. Seek appropriate medical care.

For additional Thanksgiving safety tips, visit
http://ReadyWisconsin.wi.gov. You can also check out Midwest road conditions and airport delays. Follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ReadyWisconsin) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/ReadyWisconsin).

Help Keep Leaves Out of the Streets

What do leaves in the streets have to do with algae in the lakes? Rainfall and storm water that run through streets and gutters leach phosphorus from fallen leaves and carry the nutrient-rich "tea" down the storm drains and straight to the lakes. Phosphorus is the nutrients that drives algae growth; so let's do our part to stop leaf litter leaching! Click on the link to read more about what you can do to help!

Flushable? A Message from Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District

Think Again...
What we put down our drains and toilets can negatively impact our environment and put our health at risk. Even items labeled flushable can clog pipes, tangle pumps and result in messy and costly sewer backups. By educating ourselves and each other, we can avoid expensive and dangerous mistakes while improving our sewer system practices.

Winter Brush Collection

Winter brush collection will begin bi-weekly starting November 4, 2013 weather permitting. Please have your brush out by 7:00 a.m. on Mondays. Please leave branches as long as possible, as this will save you and our crews' time. Brush is considered at limbs and branches from trees and large shrubs. All other woody vegetation such as plant stalks, small bush trimmings, etc. will not be collected. This type of material can be taken to the compost site on Highway Q south of the Village. Place brush on the terrace with the cut ends towards the street. If you have a contractor trim or prune your trees or bushes, they are responsible for the removal of the brush. If you have any questions regarding the collection, please call the Public Works garage at 608-849-5892.

Madison & Dane County's WIC Program is Open For Business

Federal Government Shutdown has not Affected Local WIC Services.

Madison WI – October 3, 2013 - Despite the shutdown of the federal government, and in response to the confusion created by national news stories reporting closures of the WIC program, local WIC officials wish to clarify that the program in Madison & Dane County is open for business. WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

According to WIC supervisor Lesly Scott, “We need to get the word out that our program is indeed functioning normally. Our clinic hours are the same as always at both the South Park Street and East Washington locations.” She also reminds the public that WIC clinics outside of Madison will be open as usual on Fridays.  “WIC checks are good and we are encouraging clients to spend them.” Scott points out that these services will continue until further notice and that she is working with the state WIC Director and continually assessing the fiscal situation.

Local merchants and vendors should not experience any difficulty redeeming those vouchers. State officials assure farmers participating in the WIC and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program that they can continue to use their farmers' market checks through October 31 and farmers can continue to deposit checks through November 15.

Those who have further questions about the WIC program can call the clinic at (608) 267-1111. Detailed information about the WIC program can be found online at www.publichealthmdc.com/family/wic/
