Inclement Weather Leaf Collection

Despite the early snowfalls as of late, the Public Works Department will continue with leaf pick up throughout the Village of Waunakee through the end of November. The snow covered and frozen leaves are causing the Public Works vehicles to fill and freeze up, considerably slowing down the operation. Typically, leaves are picked up weekly starting on the north end of the Village and working east to west to the south. Due to the weather, collection is in its third week of attempting to complete that route. Collection is scheduled to resume operation on Tuesday, November 12.

Remember to keep the branches and leaves separate from each other. Both items must be on the terrace in front of your house, not in the road. There will be no leaf pick-up in the alleys and leaves in plastic bags must be removed from the bags before pick-up. Leaves and yard waste may also be dropped off at the MRD Compost Facility located at 5211 Highway Q.

What is Fall Leaf Tea?

Leaves and yard waste contain phosphorus. When it rains, stormwater flows through leaf piles in streets creating a phosphorus rich “leaf tea” that travels through storm drains to our lakes. The excess phosphorus leads to toxic algae blooms, low oxygen levels and green murky water in our lakes. Don't leave your leaves in the streets, leave them on your lawn (on the terrace for pickup) and our lakes will love you!

For more information on how to keep streets leaf-free and on fall leaf collection, click the links below:
