Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "We All Looked Up"
Artist(s): Liz Pelton
Materials: Paint on Steel
Location on Main Street: Corner of Main St. and South St., in front of Main St. Diner
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "For my piece, I wanted to depict a nostalgic scene - something that would resonate with Wisconsinites and really strike a cord by evoking a sense of place. I also loved the idea of playing with silhouettes within a silhouette. This scene also got me thinking about rural spaces and how lucky we are to live in a place without significant light pollution. In Wisconsin, you can still go outside at night and look up at the stars and ponder your place in the universe and I hope my barn is a reminder of that."
You're invited!
Join us for an afternoon full of Wisconsin tradition as we auction off 15 unique steel barns from the 2016 Barns on Main Waunakee Public Art Project! Stop by on Sunday, September 18 during Wauktoberfest to take a one of a kind piece of Wisconsin art home with you!
This project brought together 15 artists, all from Waunakee, who created what Wisconsin meant to them on a 27" steel barn donated by Endres Manufacturing Co. The barns have been on display along Main St. in Waunakee since June, but now it's time they find a permanent home.
All proceeds from the auction will benefit local charities. This year the recipients of proceeds from the project are: Endres Manfacturing Co. Foundation, Schumacher Farm Park, and the Waunakee Creative Economy Initiative.
Stay tuned as we will feature a couple of barns each week leading up to the auction on September 18. Keep an eye out for the next installment of Barn of the Day. For more information on Barns on Main and to see photos of all 15 pieces of art, visit www.waunakee.com/barnsonmain

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "Barn Quilt/Quilted Barn"
Artist(s): Jane Vaughan
Materials: Fabric, adhesives, epoxy
Location on Main Street: In front of Waunakee Furniture, ETC
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "After seeing the Goats on Main last year I wanted to have the fabric arts represented this year. The barn shape was perfect to display the Barn Raising quilt pattern I used on one side of the barn. There are over 80 pieced log cabin blocks on this side made with pieces that measure only 1" wide. The squares are 2 1/2" each. The remaining side is done in traditional fabrics except for the barn quilt which is painted wood. The challenge was to find fabrics that would look realistic."

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "E Plurbus Unum. "Out of many, one"
Artist(s): Stephanie Agnew of Millie's
Materials: U.S. Currency
Location on Main Street: Corner of South St and Main St, next to Chamber of Commerce
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "The inspiration for my barn design was to encourage creative economy; spend money! Hence "e pluribus unum" which thanks to Sr. Alma at St Teresa's Academy in Kansas City Missouri I believe it means "out of one there is many" it takes many to make a town flourish; one idea needs many to bring to fruition. It's no secret that I also believe very much in the other quote that is on every piece of money in our country. "In God we trust".
I feel that encouraging people to spend money in our downtown area and on local art, art therapy, and the arts in general is one of the most important things in revitalizing any area. This bridges the gap between age, economy, race, religion, and lifestyle.
All the coins are officially facing forward which means on the front of the barn you see the heads and on the back of the barn, since they're all facing forward, in the same direction, you see the tails. I think we all are looking forward to the future and enjoying many more exciting events in Waunakee."

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "Repair, Reuse, Make Do"
Artist(s): Liese Pfeifer
Materials: Steel, fused glass, and paint
Location on Main Street: Corner in front of Acker builders, Endres Plaza
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "I had the opportunity to be on the board of Schumacher Farm Park for several years, so I know well the story of Marcella Schumacher and her hopes of educating the public on the humble rural life in the 1920-30’s. Recently I have worked at the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection at UW-Madison, where I was immersed in how textiles tell stories. The story of feed sacks used for clothing is the subject of my barn.
Many know of the colorful patterns feed and food companies put on their storage bags. What I discovered in my research was that two things helped to bring this about. In 1857 Gibbs designed and built the first sewing machine that created a chain stitch; one where you pull one thread and the entire seam unravels. Also in the late part of the 19th century, our old growth forests were cut. Feed companies that used to store corn in barrels started to switch to heavy cloth bags.
My barn replicates the designs used on various feed sacks. This era gave us many sayings such as: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.”

A Tribute to John Laubmeier
Waunakee lost one of its treasures Sunday when John Laubmeier passed away. John was a teacher, mentor, leader, friend, and true family man. There is no way to describe all of the contributions to the Waunakee School District and Village of Waunakee that John made in this short tribute. I will just share one of the lessons John taught me, which was to try to find a win/win for each situation that presents itself. Treat both sides with respect and be able to shake hands at the end of the conversation. John was presented with the worst kind of news about two years ago, and when I think back over this time, a few things come to mind. John really didn't have an opportunity to win his final battle. From my perspective, he did manage to find some wins along the way. The biggest was using his time to focus and accomplish a few things he may not have otherwise. He also battled this terrible disease and beat the expectations. He seemed to get some satisfaction from that. I never saw him quit, and he always had a positive attitude. I'm very fortunate, as are many in the community, to have been given the opportunity to be a part of John's life. Our community is a better place because John chose to share himself with us. I will end this with what I think John was most proud of, his family. If you wanted to see pride in John, all you had to do was bring up and hear him talk about his wife Nancy and his children John and Angela. He would say they are his legacy.
Thank you John!

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "Quilted Barn"
Artist(s): Lori Carlson and daughter Claudia Carlson
Materials: Paint, Ceramic on Steel
Location on Main Street: In front of Gold Nugget
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "Our theme “Quilted Barn” was originally brought to mind by the “Mill House Quilts” barn, which after the fact we could see struck a chord with many participants. We then wanted to make it even more “Wisconsin” by adding the state bird - a robin - and the state flower - a violet. We kept it simple and bright so as to have good curb-appeal. We hope that this very Wisconsin-themed barn will make a colorful addition to someone’s garden, patio or yard."

Today's Pick: Whimsy in Waunakee
Artist(s): Kayla Proctor
Materials: Ceramic on Steel
Location on Main Street: In front of Gather (formerly Mojo's)
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "Growing up on the outskirts of Waunakee I enjoyed all of the farm land and the beautiful barns that surround the area. I was looking to find a way to combine ceramics with the cutout provided and creating the barn board pieces and features were very enjoyable for me. Barns themselves have been an inspiration for many pieces of my own artwork over the years as I am amazed by their history and the beauty they bring to the land around them."
You're invited!
Join us for an afternoon full of Wisconsin tradition as we auction off 15 unique steel barns from the 2016 Barns on Main Waunakee Public Art Project! Stop by on Sunday, September 18 during Wauktoberfest to take a one of a kind piece of Wisconsin art home with you!
his project brought together 15 artists, all from Waunakee, who created what Wisconsin meant to them on a 27" steel barn donated by Endres Manufacturing Co. The barns have been on display along Main St. in Waunakee since June, but now it's time they find a permanent home.

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "Born from Prairie, Return to Prairie"
Artist(s): Abby Wilson
Materials: Acrylic on Steel
Location on Main Street: In front of Red Barn Co. Store
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "The barn that I painted is an examination of what constitutes a prairie from the point of view of Schumacher farm. On one side of the barn silhouette, I have painted the newest built barn on the property from the perspective of the farm compound. I included the original "tenant" of the prairie, a doe, and a symbol the farm itself, an antique tractor, to symbolize evolution of life on the Schumacher farm property. The past, the present and the future trinity. The other side of the barn silhouette, shows a fox, another symbolic nod to the past prairie. She and her kit are sitting on the front porch of the original farmhouse looking over the highway to the 21st century : Waunakee's industrial park. The past meets the future with only the so called "bump in the road" of a family farm that turned into a museum to save itself and its memories."

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's pick: "Don't Forget Your Roots"
Artist(s): Carly McGowan and Pat McGowan
Materials: Enamel paints on steel
Location on Main Street: In front of Lone Girl Brewing Co.
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: " “Don’t Forget Your Roots” is all about reminding us where we came from, what built us, and what continues to support us. It is an ode to the farm town roots of Waunakee as well as a subtle reminder to Waunakee residents that no matter where you go, you can always return to your roots. Pat, who was raised in Waunakee and is now raising his own kids here, has seen Waunakee grow from a rural farming town to the vibrant, growing community that it now is. Carly, on the other hand, just returned from her first year of out-of-state college and is realizing the importance of having a place to call home. It is important, both as individuals and as a community, that we remember where we came from, and where we can return to."

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "Color of Summer"
Artist(s): Beth Crook
Materials: Hand dyed fabric, rope, string, wool and sealant
Location on Main Street: In front of Ripp's Bar
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "As a young artist in Waunakee, I spent days, months and years dying fabric at SteelWool Studio. Everyday, as I would drive away from the shop, I would look back and admire the beautiful cloths hanging on the line outside of the barn. That moment always brought me much joy and satisfaction. This piece represents those summer days of work, laughter, frustration and joy. The hand dyed canvas that adorns this barn was made with the knowledge gained from years of color theory experiments and practice. For me, this piece brings me back to a summer afternoons. looking down into the valley at our hard work and feeling the warm breeze on my face."

Location on Main St.: In front of Mill House Quilts, intersection of Main Street and Baker Street
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "I love the downtown architecture on Main Street. So I went with interesting buildings, the old railroad station and Murphy's Mill behind it and Mill House Quilts across the street. I do a lot of detail in stained glass. I even got a piece of HO train tracks for in front of the depot. A challenge for me was the fuzzy sight in the Mill House windows behind the glass."
For more information on Barns on Main and to see photos of all 15 pieces of art, visit www.waunakee.com/barnsonmain. For photos, click on the "2016 Barns Auction" tab on the left side of the page.
Hope to see you at the auction!

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!
Today's Pick: "Waunakee Gothic"
Artist(s): Jenna Gilmore
Materials: Acrylic, Acrylic Air Brush
Location on Main Street: In front of Lone Girl Brewing Co, 114 E Main Street, Waunakee
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "The moment I saw the barn cut-out and the shape of the silhouette, I was reminded of Grant Wood’s “American Gothic.” I wanted to create my own spin on a classic and well-known American painting. Using acrylic and acrylic airbrush, I chose to give this traditional piece a comical twist. I have lived in the Midwest my whole life, and have grown up around the smells and sights of farmland and cows; what better subject matter than these Wisconsin staples! I chose to keep the clothes and elongated, solemn facial expressions similar to that of Wood’s, but create the house in the background as a classic red barn instead. Ideally, these “Waunakee Gothic” cows provide a whimsical and comforting feeling for the viewer."
