Statement from Village President Chris Zellner

The Village is aware of public feedback regarding the TWall development concept for Main Street between West and Fish Streets. Concerns have been raised by the public through an online petition, social media, and other sources. This feedback is appreciated and timely, as this proposal is only in the very early stages of consideration. To date no formal action has occurred nor is further action scheduled. The Plan Commission has only received a concept presentation from TWall on December 11, 2017. It is important for the public to be aware that, should consideration of this proposal proceed, a public hearing would be required in order to rezone the properties. We remind all that meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the Village website https://onbase.waunakee.com/onbaseagendaonline. Agendas are also published in the Waunakee Tribune and posted in public locations.

Holiday Trash and Recycling

The holidays are a time for giving, but they can also generate a lot of extra waste. While it’s always better to try to reduce the amount of waste we create, having extra after the holidays is almost inevitable. Below are some guidelines on how to deal with those items.

The following seasonal items can be placed in your blue Pellitteri Recycling cart:
  • Gift boxes
  • Wrapping and tissue paper (NOT the foil-type)
  • Cardboard wrapping paper tubes
  • Paper greeting cards (NO photo paper please) and gift tags
  • Envelopes
  • Cardboard (flatten, cut down to 4’ x 4’ sections or smaller)

Other items that can be recycled elsewhere:
  • Christmas trees – will be picked up by the Village (does not pertain to private streets)
  • Christmas lights and electrical cords – drop off at Waunakee Neighborhood Connection - 208 S. Century Avenue
  • Styrofoam – #6 polystyrene (NO packing peanuts) can be dropped off at Uniek, Inc. in Waunakee - 805 Uniek Drive
Did You Know?  Additional recycling can be placed in a clear garbage bag (available at Ace Hardware) and placed next to your blue recycling cart. Pellitteri will pick this up at no charge with your regular recycling.

Special trash tags can be purchased for extra garbage that doesn’t fit in your brown trash cart. The tags are $15 for a sheet of 5 and are available at Village Hall - 500 West Main Street.

Leaf Collection Update

The regular scheduled collection of leaves curbside ended on November 16th. However, due to unusual environmental conditions Village crews will attempt to make one final sweep for leaves that remain on the terraces beginning on December 7th. We cannot guarantee that the entire Village will be cleared, as quickly changing weather can force crews to focus on other priorities.

Different equipment will be used as the Village’s fleet has been converted in preparation for snow and ice removal functions. This alternate collection method is less efficient, therefore residents are asked NOT to place NEW piles of leaves in the terrace. In addition, residents are encouraged to take their own leaves to the Highway Q compost site just south of the Village if possible.

Public Works staff are evaluating this year’s circumstances and are considering potential options for future years. We also desire to be good stewards of our lakes and waterways by working to keep leaves from flowing into the storm sewers. In the meantime, we thank our residents for their patience and understanding. We also apologize to those who already made their own arrangements after November 16th and prior to our recent decision to do one more collection.

Village of Waunakee Launches Next Phase of the Creative Economy Initiative

A new task force will lead efforts to further enhance Waunakee’s profile as a creative, innovative place to live, work, and play.

Contacts:

Todd Schmidt, Waunakee Village Administrator – tschmidt@waunakee.com / (608)850-5227

Sarah Bluvas, Creative Intern, Waunakee – creative@waunakee.com / (608) 850-2830

The Village of Waunakee is excited to launch the next phase of the Creative Economy Initiative (CEI) with the creation of a new Creative Economy Task Force and a partnership with the Bolz Center for Arts Administration at UW-Madison.

Waunakee introduced the CEI in 2011 in an effort to identify existing sources of creativity and innovation in the Village that could be leveraged and grown into a vibrant sector of the local economy. Programs and accomplishments have included hosting the Imagination Celebration, which debuted in 2012; drafting a creative economy strategic plan in 2013; and conducting a landscape analysis of Waunakee’s creative economy profile in 2015. The CEI also served as a driving force behind creative projects such as Art on Main, Creative Wall at the Hall, community murals, and the Chalk Walk event.

On Monday, November 6, 2017, the Village Board unanimously approved the creation of a new task force to develop the next phase of this initiative. Their stated goal is to design an entity independent of the Village to encourage and implement creative economy projects, businesses, and services across Waunakee.

To assist with this undertaking, the Village also engaged a consulting group from the Bolz Center for Arts Administration. The Bolz Center was founded in 1969 as the first multidisciplinary business degree program to address the special needs of the emerging field of arts and nonprofit cultural management. Second-year MBA candidates from the program and their advisors will support the task force by conducting research, facilitating discussions and community conversations, and partnering with task force members to design mechanisms to set the new entity up for success.

A key component of the project will be a series of community conversations and town hall presentations designed to engage civic and business leaders, artists and arts organizations, residents, and other important stakeholders in the process and gain feedback from them to inform the task force’s work. Specifics for these public gatherings will be announced later this year via the Village’s media outlets; details will also be listed on the Village’s Creative Economy page on the Economic Development website: http://www.waunakee-ed.com/creativeeconomytaskforce.

For more information or media requests, please contact Todd Schmidt, Village Administrator/Economic Development Director, at tschmidt@waunakee.com or 608-850-5227, or Sarah Bluvas, Village Creative Intern, at creative@waunakee.com or 608-850-2830.
