Waunakee's Barn of the Day!

Today's Pick: "Portrait of John Nils Rippen: There's a Face and Story Inside Every Barn"
Artist(s): Don Esser
Materials: Horse era farm implements, found objects
Location on Main Street: In front of Chamber of Commerce
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: "My barn is titled John Nils Reppen, the father of my Norwegian grandmother who helped mentor me during my childhood. It's made from repurposed silo bands, 9 horse shoes, a sleigh runner and parts, old tools and old stainless steel butter knives for hair and mustache. My belief is that behind every barn there is a face and a story. People who devoted their lives working to make a better life for themselves and their children. Looking at a old barn is like reading the opening chapter of a book about their lives."

You're invited!
Join us for an afternoon full of Wisconsin tradition as we auction off 15 unique steel barns from the 2016 Barns on Main Waunakee Public Art Project! Stop by on Sunday, September 18 during Wauktoberfest to take a one of a kind piece of Wisconsin art home with you!

This project brought together 15 artists, all from Waunakee, who created what Wisconsin meant to them on a 27" steel barn donated by Endres Manufacturing Co. The barns have been on display along Main St. in Waunakee since June, but now it's time they find a permanent home.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit local charities. This year the recipients of proceeds from the project are: Endres Manfacturing Co. Foundation, Schumacher Farm Park, and the Waunakee Creative Economy Initiative.

Stay tuned as we will feature a couple of barns each week leading up to the auction on September 18. Keep an eye out for the next installment of Barn of the Day. For more information on Barns on Main and to see photos of all 15 pieces of art, visit

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!

Today's Pick: "The Spirit of Wisconsin"
Artist(s): Jennifer M. Cuccia, Jeff Murphy, Leo Nello Rotelli
Materials: 72 different inlaid woods, barn wood, copper, watercolor, glass, porcelain tile, iron
Location on Main Street: In front of Fred's Village Market
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration: “The Spirit of Wisconsin was an enjoyable collaborative effort and helped me to celebrate my appreciation and many years of working with wood. I’ve always wanted to create this “salute” to our fine state. I am proud to say there are 72 different types of wood inlayed carefully to create each county in Wisconsin. Everything from exotic ebony to red oak was used, along with beautiful barn wood as background. I’ve also made a flagpole and other things of iron and copper to highlight my love for blacksmithing. The back side of our barn features a beautiful Autumn image of pheasants grazing lazily. The image is recreated using UV-safe inks from an original expressionistic watercolor by Leo Rotelli. Additionally our barn is enhanced warmly with a glazed tile silo - a nod to the original Gambrel-style barns."

Waunakee's Barn of the Day!

Today's Pick: "Pieces of Home"
Artist(s): Erin Moran and Steph Moran
Materials: Acrylic Paint, Tiles, Grout, Adhesive
Location on Main Street: In front of US Bank
In their own words – Artist’s Inspiration:"We love color in the Moran household and this barn was no exception. We knew immediately that we wanted our barn to be colorful and exciting. Our mosaic let us do just that. The front side has a plethora of colors and whimsical patterns, displaying the tiles and plates in funky patterns. The back side, colored mostly red and with a barn outline, adheres to a more traditional image of a barn. With the use of many different mosaic pieces including keys, ceramics, beads, dishes, and more - our barn "Pieces of Home" represents for us what home means. Many pieces make a whole just as ‘home’ in any sense is built with many different things."
