Public Notice to Residents: MRD Compost Facility
Beginning May 1, 2011, the MRD compost facility at 5211 Highway Q operated by 2nd Season Recycling will implement some rule changes. Residents of the City of Middleton and the Villages of Waunakee and Shorewood Hills may continue to bring the following items to the site at no charge: brush, branches, limbs (up to 4” in diameter), wood chips, sawdust, grass clippings, leaves, plants, Christmas trees, stumps (clean) and clean wood (not painted or treated). No other items are accepted at the site. Residents of other communities and commercial operators are invited to use the compost facility subject to the drop-off rates posted at the site. Rates will be based on vehicle size; we would politely suggest you maximize your loads to experience the best value. The compost facility will be open seasonally from April 1 through November 30.
Hours of operation for the MRD compost facility will be as follows:
Monday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm
Tuesday 7:00 am – 7:00 pm
Wednesday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm
Thursday 7:00 am – 7:00 pm
Friday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm
Saturday 7:00 am – 1:00 pm
Sunday closed
Please plan your home projects accordingly. After-hours drop off is prohibited and is subject to fine. Our neighboring communities are fortunate to have the MRD compost facility to handle yard material processing. Diverting this material from the landfill is something our communities can be proud of. Waunakee Residential Spring Clean-Up
Special Residential Pick-Up! Pellitteri Waste System and the Village of Waunakee Public Works are pleased to sponsor the 13th annual Waunakee Residential Spring Clean-up! Please follow the guidelines listed below. If you have questions or concerns call the Waunakee Public Works Department at 849-5892.
Who: All Waunakee residences, four units or smaller.
What: Special Refuse Pick-Up Day.
When: May 23, 24, 25 & 26, 2011 (The same day as your weekly refuse pick-up)
Where: Have items to the curbside by 7:00 a.m.
Why: Your opportunity to clean out those closets, garages, basements and whatever else you
need to dispose of.
** Small items should be placed in a durable container or box.
Acceptable Items:
- Furniture
- Household trash
- DRY Carpet, rolled and tied for one person to handle
- Swing sets (must be dismantled)
- Box springs
- Mattresses
- Bed frames
- Gas grills (no tanks)
- Charcoal grills
- Small lawn mowers or snow blowers (gas and oil must be removed)
NOT Acceptable Items:
- Electronic waste
- Yard waste
- Building materials
- Tires
- Lead acid batteries
- 55 gallon drums
- Household pesticides
- Concrete or dirt
- Oil tanks and filters
- Vehicle engine blocks
- Paint and paint thinners
- Televisions, computers and computer monitors
- Household appliances (stoves, ovens, dishwashers, freezers, microwaves, refrigerators,
dryers, washers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, water softeners or water heaters)

Waunakee National Night Out
Waunakee Police Dept has picked the date of Wednesday August 10, 2011 for our annual NNO event. It will be held in Village Park again this year from 5pm to 7pm. More details to follow in future newsletters.
"Slow Down" Yard Signs Available
Safe Communities in partnership with the Waunakee Police Department, is conducting its annual Slow Down Campaign. Yard signs will pop up in yards across Dane County reminding motorists to “Slow Down, Watch for Kids.”
Why should we slow down? The faster vehicles travel, the more likely crashes are to occur and the more severe the injuries will be. Children are especially vulnerable in these situations. Injuries and deaths associated with child pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents increase significantly with small increases in speed. Collisions occurring at 20 mph result in death approximately 5% of the time and approximately 30% of victims suffer no injury at all. At 30 mph, 45% are KILLED and most are injured. At 40 mph, 85% are killed and all are injured.
According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, pedestrian injuries are the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 5 to 14. Each year in the United States, nearly 900 children ages 14 and under die from pedestrian/vehicle injuries and another 24,000 are injured in traffic-related crashes.
