Barrels on Parade

In collaboration with Abby Wilson Painting, Endres Manufacturing, and Springfield Welding and Manufacturing , the 2018 Village of Waunakee’s Public Art Project highlights historic Waunakee, Downtown Madison, and the University of Wisconsin. Local artist, Abby Wilson was commissioned and designed artistic metal renderings that have been affixed to ten wooden barrels. Springfield Welding and Manufacturing, in partnership with Endres Manufacturing, assisted in translating the designs to metal, rolling and rendering the plates, and attaching the plates to the barrels. Each of the three designs will be featured on 3 of the barrels with one special barrel, stained red, signed with University of Wisconsin Athletic Coaches.

Barrels are on display throughout the community in mostly high traffic locations including the Village Center, the Waunakee Public Library, Rex’s Inkeeper, Lone Girl, and Village Hall. If you have an interest in purchasing a barrel for your home or business, please contact Adam Bentley, Assistant Village Administrator at abentley@waunakee.com or at 608-850-2182. Proceeds raised by barrel sales will go to the Endres Manufacturing Company Foundation, and to the Village of Waunakee, in its continued support of similar artistic endeavors. The Village sincerely appreciates the work of all our partners on this project, many of which donated their time, talents, and labor in ensuring this project was successful.

Halloween Safety

Waunakee Halloween Trick or Treating
Wednesday, October 13, 2018
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Please keep everyone safe this year on Halloween, drive extra cautious in the neighborhoods and watch out for pedestrians. The following are some safety tips for parents and children:
  1. Teach your children how to properly cross a street. Only cross streets at crosswalks.
  2. Help your child pick out or make a costume that has eye holes large enough for good peripheral vision.
  3. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape.
  4. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks.
  5. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
  6. If your child is carrying a prop, make sure the tips are smooth and flexible enough to not cause injury if fallen on.
  7. Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren't going with them.
  8. The safest idea is to have an adult accompany kids. If you're not with the kids, be sure to set a time they will be home by. Make sure they know how important it is for them to be home on time.
  9. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by and adult.
  10. Teach your kids about not getting into strangers cars or talking to strangers, no matter what the person says to them. Explain to them as simply as you can that some adults are bad and want to hurt children, that they should never go into a house that they don't know, get into a car or go anywhere with a stranger. Also, tell them what to do should this happen, to scream as loud as they can to draw attention and to run away as fast as they can to someplace safe.

Supporting Our Business Community

Construction comes with obstacles, detours, and inconveniences. The reconstruction on the County Highway Q corridor (Heron Trail to Meffert Road south and outside of the Village) presents challenges for several businesses in our community. Residents can do their part to help support these businesses by shopping local. Don’t let the inconvenience of a slightly longer drive keep you from frequenting the many businesses which give so much back to our Village.

The Waunakee Area Chamber of Commerce has a great deal of information about our local businesses. You can learn more at www.waunakeechamber.com, facebook.com/waunakeechamber, or by contacting Chamber staff at (608) 849-5977.

Dane County Emergency Notification System - Are You Registered?

Dane County’s Emergency Notification System is used to alert people and provide important information during an emergency. In the event of an emergency, officials can identify the affected area and send a message that describes the situation and recommends the protective actions residents should take. The system will automatically call out to all land-line telephone numbers within that geographic area and deliver a recorded message.

You can also sign up to receive alert messages on your cell phone, by text message, or by Email. These are a popular and effective means of receiving emergency information. You will, however, need to register your contact information in order to receive these alerts.

AtHoc Cloud provides these notification services for Dane County. Signing up with this service will enable local authorities to alert you about potential life-threatening and public safety threats in your community. Residents who sign up may be contacted with information about emergencies like:

Hazardous materials incidents
Emergency evacuations
Missing persons
Dangerous persons
Public health alerts

You can also sign up to receive email and text messages for notification of severe weather Watches and Warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

When signing up, you will be prompted to create a new account. You will then be asked to provide your address and personal contact information, such as your email address or your cell phone number for text messages.

Dane County and AtHoc Cloud are serious about protecting your personal information. Your contact information will be used for emergency notification purposes only. Your information will not be used for any other reason and will not be released to the public.
