As part of this year's street improvements, we will be rebuilding Winston Way (Click Here) from Bristol Bay to approximately 900 feet west, as well as other streets throughout Waunakee. MRD Compost Facility Change in Hours

Due to the overwhelming public response to the restricted hours at the compost site and significant pressure from the Village of Waunakee the Bruce Company has agreed to extend the hours for the compost site on the weekends.  As many of you are aware, the change in hours was originally initiated by the Bruce Company because of contractors and others not abiding by the rules for types of materials that are accepted at the site.  The Bruce Company indicated they were having issues with residents, but mainly contractors bringing material to the site that is not intended for the compost site.  The operation of the compost site is subsidized by the Village of Waunakee, City of Middleton and Shorewood Hills.  The subsidy allows for our residents to dump material at the site for no cost.  However, contractors are required to pay to dump at the site as well as residents not within our communities.

Starting this weekend, the Bruce Company will be leaving the gate open on the weekends.  The site will not be supervised on the weekend, but our hope is that leaving the site restricted during the week we will not have issues.  If we do have illegal dumping issues, we may need to further evaluate the access.

Monday          7:00 am – 5:30 pm
Tuesday          7:00 am – 7:00 pm
Wednesday     7:00 am – 5:30 pm
Thursday         7:00 am – 7:00 pm
Friday             8:00 am – 8:00 pm
Saturday         8:00 am – 8:00 pm
Sunday           8:00 am – 8:00 pm

Waunakee Schools Celebrate Arbor Day

Both Prairie and Heritage Elementary Schools celebrated Arbor Day recently in a big way by involving the students in planting trees on school property. I enjoyed visiting with the students and talking about what trees do to make our community more beautiful and enjoyable for everyone.

A special thank you goes to those teacher friends of mine who shared some special Arbor Day jokes with us! (you had to be there)

Waunakee Styrofoam Collection @ Uniek

Did you know that Styrofoam makes up almost 30% of the space in our landfills?  Do your part and drop off Styrofoam at a local Waunakee business, Uniek Inc.  They will recycle it and make it into picture frames versus letting it go into our landfills.

When is the drop off?
Every 3rd Saturday of the month from 10:00 am-2:00 pm starting May 21, 2011.

Where is the drop-off site?
Uniek Inc:  805 Uniek Drive (at the end of the business park down from Culver's). A sign on the far right hand side of the building near the cul-de-sac will mark the exact drop off location.

How much styrofoam can I bring?
As long as everything you have is the type allowed, there is no limit to the amount you can bring.

Who can drop styrofoam off?
Anyone! Both Village of Waunakee residents and residents from surrounding communities can drop off styrofoam products. Even businesses can drop off items as long as they qualify as listed below.

What types of styrofoam and EPS WILL be accepted?
What will be accepted is clean #6 styrofoam, which is primarily block polystyrene packaging material. This is the bulky polystyrene that is used around computers, electronics, and other items. Clean cups and food packaging that have been washed clean will also be accepted. Printed or colored items will be accepted.

What types of styrofoam will NOT be accepted?
The program will not accept foam insulation board, takeout boxes, or any #6 styrofoam with food still in it.  Uniek also cannot accept #4 polyethylene foam packaging or sheets. This is commonly mistaken as styrofoam, but can be identified as it does not break easily nor does it make the small particles when broken like styrofoam does. Packing peanuts are NOT accepted.

"Slow Down" Yard Signs Available
Safe Communities in partnership with the Waunakee Police Department, is conducting its annual Slow Down Campaign.  Yard signs will pop up in yards across Dane County reminding motorists to “Slow Down, Watch for Kids.”

Why should we slow down?  The faster vehicles travel, the more likely crashes are to occur and the more severe the injuries will be. Children are especially vulnerable in these situations.  Injuries and deaths associated with child pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents increase significantly with small increases in speed.  Collisions occurring at 20 mph result in death approximately 5% of the time and approximately 30% of victims suffer no injury at all. At 30 mph, 45% are KILLED and most are injured. At 40 mph, 85% are killed and all are injured.

According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, pedestrian injuries are the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 5 to 14. Each year in the United States, nearly 900 children ages 14 and under die from pedestrian/vehicle injuries and another 24,000 are injured in traffic-related crashes.

If you're interested in posting signs in your yard or neighborhood, they will be available for pick up while supplies last at the Waunakee Police Department 205 N. Klein Dr.

Questions can be sent to newsletter@waunakeepd.org  Questions submitted may be featured in future newsletters.  The person submitting the question will not be identified.
